ABSTRACT

This study, anchored on the tenets of the uses and gratification and diffusion innovation theories investigates the influence of Information and Communication and Technologies (ICTs) on Academic Performance Of UNIBEN Students. The study became necessary following the fact that students are usually exposed to and utilize ICTs. Hence, it became imperative to empirically ascertain the extent ICTs on the academic performance of UNIBEN students. The survey design adopted the with an 8-item questionnaire to elicit data from the 398 students of the 13 Faculties of the University who were selected through purposive sampling technique to represent and reflect the opinions of the students of UNIBEN. Data obtained were presented and analyzed with the aid of frequency tables and simple percentage, mean scores based on the 4-piont liker scale with 3.00 criterion was also adopted in ascertain whether respondents accepted and rejected each of the items on the questionnaire. It was discovered that the use of ICTs to a large extent have a huge effect on academic performance of students. Thus, the study concluded that ICTs have a role to play in the life of every student in recent times especially in their academic performance. It was recommended that tertiary institution should as a matter of importance adopts ICTs as its potentials are vast and essential in expanding the horizon of knowledge of students beyond geographical barriers.
