ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the home environment on the academic performance of students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were developed, and respondents were given a set of 24 questions to gather their perspectives. A descriptive survey design was chosen for this study because it accurately and clearly describes existing conditions. A total of 24 closed-ended questions were included in the "Influence of Home Environment on Students’ Academic Performance in Public Secondary Schools Questionnaire (IHESAPPSSQ)," which was divided into two sections: one for personal data (Section A) and another for research-related questions (Section B). The basic random sample method was used to choose respondents from five public senior high schools that were sampled. The data analysis method used was mean analysis. The results showed that psychological characteristics including motivation, goals, and self-esteem can be influenced by socioeconomic level. better socioeconomic background students typically have more self-assurance and better goals for their education, which has a favourable effect on their academic achievement. It has been determined that family size affects students' academic performance in both direct and indirect ways. Larger families may experience difficulties with resource allocation and parental participation, whereas smaller families might offer more individualised resources and attention. The government, curriculum developers, and testing authorities are among those who are urged to take the impact of the family environment on academic achievement into account when formulating policies and developing educational strategies. Moreover, it is recommended to increase bursary grants to low-income students in order to keep them in school and improve their performance.
