ABSTRACT
This study investigated the influence of Home Economics Education on the acquisition of entrepreneurial skills among students in University of Benin, Benin City. Four research questions were raised and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significant. The research questions bothered on the extent to which Home Economics Education influence innovative, creative interpersonal communication and managerial skills of students in university of Benin, Benin City. Descriptive survey research design was used in carrying out the study. The target population was seventy (70) Home Economics Education students in their 300 and 400 level. Due to the limited population, the entire population was used and there was no selected sample size. A structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation and the hypothesis was test using two sample independent t-test.
The study revealed that Home economics education influence students’ innovative skills to a high extent. The study revealed also that Home economics education influence students’ creative skills to a high extent. The study also revealed that Home economics education influence students’ interpersonal communication to a high extent. The study further revealed that Home economics education influence students’ managerial to a high extent. The study finally revealed that there is no significance difference between Home Economics Education and acquisition of entrepreneurial skills among male and female students in university of Benin, Benin-City. From the findings, the study therefore recommended that, Home Economics Education Programme should be equipped and adequately financed to enable the programme obtain necessary materials for practical and productivity. This is necessary because learning environment should be a replica of the working environment. Economics Home Education Programme should be given appropriate status at all levels of education system to empower individuals and prepare them to become employers of labour and/or employees in private or public sector of the economy. Schools should allocate enough time to practical teaching of Home Economics programme in school time table.
