INFLUENCE OF HIV/AIDS KNOWLEDGE ON THE SEXUAL PRACTICES OF STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of HIV/AIDS Knowledge of undergraduates in University of Benin, Benin- City Area of Edo State. The study reviewed related literature on influence of HIV/AIDS Knowledge of undergraduates. Four research questions were raised to guide the study.

 

A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of this study comprised of all Undergraduate students totalling a population of 1125 while a stratified sampling technique was employed by the study to choose a sample size of 56 (fifty six) students which represented 5% of the total population. A structured questionnaire titled: HIV/AIDS Knowledge and Sexual Practices Questionnaire was used for data collection while the data were analysed with descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation.

The findings of the study revealed thatstudents are knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS in University of Benin, Benin- City to a very high extent. The knowledge of HIV/AIDS of undergraduates influences their sexual practices in University of Benin, Benin- City.To a very high extent parents’ level of education influence the Knowledge of HIV/AIDS of Undergraduates in University of Benin, Benin- City. And parents level of Education has little or no influence the Sexual Practices of Undergraduates in University of Benin, Benin- City. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made: There is need to improve knowledge about effect of HIV/Aids among college students. Tertiary institution should teach sex education as a compulsory subject for the students to have knowledge of HIV/AIDS and other STIs and identified ways to prevent sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS. Government, parents and college authorities should act decisively towards stopping the continued growth of all attitudes and behaviors that increases the immoral behaviors among students to reduce and avert the resultant increasing numbers of Nigerian students that are being infected with HIV and other STIs.
