ABSTRACT
This research focused on the influence of Guidance and Counselling services on academic achievement of secondary school students in Ovia-North East .To guide this study, four research questions and were answered directly.
The population of the study consists of six hundred and twenty students (620) from 8 senior secondary schools in Ovia-North East. A sample of hundred (100) students from the 8 senior secondary school was randomly selected for this study. The research instrument used to gather data for the study was a Questionnaire titled “Influence ofGuidance and Counselling Services on academic achievement of secondary school students Questionnaire (IGCSAASSSQ)”. Data collected was analysed using Simple percentage, mean and standard deviation.
The findings in this study revealed that Counselling services available in secondary schools in Ovia-North East includes orientation services, appraisal services, information services and the level of guidance and counselling services in secondary schools is high and in general counselling services positively influences students academic achievement in secondary schools
The recommendations were; School administrators should organize various guidance and counselling activities and qualified resource persons should be invited to deliver lectures on various professions especially to final year students, School counsellors should motivate students to make use of the available services and introduce individual, peer and group counselling in schools as part of counselling program. Lastly, students (irrespective of gender ) should be motivated through conferences, seminars and workshop on the need to participate in guidance and counselling activities for proper self and academic adjustment and development of healthy and positive attitude.
