ABSTRACT
This study is an attempt to assess the influence of financial and nonfinancial rewards on the performance of student athletes in the University of Benin. To make this possible four research purpose were raised to determine if financial rewards influence the performance of athletes, examine the direction of influence of financial reward on the performance of athletes, assess if non-financial reward influence the performance of athletes and evaluate if the non-financial rewards that can influence the performance of athletes in University of Benin The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 100 respondents were used for this study. set of questionnaires were utilized in this study, the first set of questionnaires dealt with the personal data of the respondents and the other set of questionnaires dealt with issues raised in the research question. The validity of the study was determined by the researcher’s supervisor and the Cronbach alpha statistics result gotten from the reliability test were 0.83, indicating that the instrument was reliable. The study conclude that in order to boost student athlete’s performance in sporting activities/events/competitions, both financial and non-financial rewards and/or awards are important and as such should be provided and presented to these athletes. The study therefore recommends that since the study ascertain that reward is a motivating factor to student athlete, schools and event planners should therefore remunerate student athletes so they can be the best they can and that Award ceremonies should be organized for successful student athletes as this would go a long way in raising their selfesteem.
