ABSTRACT

This study was carried out with the aim of finding out the influence of family type on adolescent involvement in social vices in Edo State. This study ascertained the extents to which family factors such as parent child rearing style family type and parent socio economic background could encourage and influence social vices. This research adopted a descriptive survey based on correlation research design. The population of the study used for the study was 43,470, with a sample size of Four hundred and fifty (450) adolescent students drawn from the population. This sample size was drawn from different faculties in the University of Benin through stratified random sampling. The research instrument used for data collection in this study was a questionnaire titled: Influence of Family Type on Adolescent Involvement in Social Vices in Edo State. The major findings of the study revealed that monogamous and polygamous family are the common types of family in Edo State and the family has a significant influence on the level of adolescent involvement in social vices while parental negligence has largely contributed to increase in social vices among adolescents. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made; parents should be more committed and dedicated to the raising of their children, government should be more committed to the provision of adequate infrastructures needed in the public schools in the country, adequate supervision and monitoring should be embarked on, regularly by the government officials, and then parents, guardians and the government should encourage family planning and propagation of societal values.
