INFLUENCE OF FAMILY STRESS ON SPORT PERFORMANCE AMONG ATHLETES OF THE EDO STATE SPORTS COMMISSION

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to find out family stress and sports performance among athletes of the University of Benin. Four research questions were raised and four corresponding hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significant. The study adopted correlational research design. The population of this study was made up of 560 athletes from the Edo State sport commission. The sample size was made up of 280 student-athletes and the simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. The instrument was validated by three experts all from the University of Benin. The split half method of reliability was used to establish the reliability. Data collected was subjected to Cronbach alpha and a reliability coefficient of 0.719 was obtained. The questionnaire was the instrument used for this study. It was made up of three sections. The data collected from the respondents through the questionnaire forms was analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage for their bio-data, while inferential statistics of Pearson and regression statistics was used in testing hypotheses. The findings of this study revealed that there is a significant relationship between family stress on the sports performance of athletes in the Edo State Sports Commission. More so, there was a significant relationship between family stress and sports performance across all age groups. The findings suggest that gender plays a role in how family stress affects athletic performance. The study concludes that the crucial role of family support in optimizing sports performance, suggesting that sports organizations should implement targeted interventions to help athletes cope with family-related stress.
