ABSTRACT
This project examined the Influence of family status on academic performance of secondary school students in Orhiornwon local Government Area Edo State. To provide focus for the study, three research questions were raised. The population of the study consist of 4,850 secondary school students in all the public secondary schools in Orhiomwon local government area, Edo State. The simple random sampling techniques was adopted. A sample of (200) respondents was randomly selected from the population. A descriptive frequency and simple percentage was used. From the findings of the study it was revealed that educational performance of students is measured by examination or continuous assessment, Student academic performance is a way of meeting short or long terms goals in education, Students’ academic performance especially in secondary school level is not only a pointer to the effectiveness of the schools but a major determinant of the future of the students, High income parents are more involved in their children’s education than low income parents. The study therefore conclude that Educational performance of students is measured by examination or continuous assessment. Also, the Academic performance of students is commonly measured by examinations or continuous assessment but there is no general agreement on how it is best tested or which aspects are most important. Furthermore, student academic performance is a way of meeting short or long terms goals in education especially in secondary school level. It can also be concluded that high income parents are more involved in their children’s education than low income parents. Based on the conclusion the following recommendations were made that there is need for government to increase bursary allocation to the students from poor families to retain them in school and enhance their academic performance. Also, to boost the economic status of households in through investing in more income generating projects in the region. There is need for government to implement policies and programs aimed at reducing disparities in access to educational resources, such as textbooks, technology, tutoring services, and extracurricular activities, especially for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This could include providing subsidies for educational materials or offering free access to academic support programs.
