ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of family life education programmes on the socio-economic well-being of women living in Oredo local government area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The survey research design method was adopted for the study. A sample size of 72 respondents who were drawn through a simple random technique was used in the study. A self-structured questionnaire designed with a modified Likert Scale method made up of a-four-point rating scale of Strongly Agreed (SA), Agreed (A), Disagreed (D) and Strongly (SD) was the instrument adopted for the study. After the validation of the instrument, it was pilot-tested on a sample of 20 respondents for reliability. The instrument’s reliability was determined using the Conbach’s alpha procedure. The correlation coefficient of the instrument was found to be 0.71. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics; involving frequency count, simple percentages and mean score analysis.
The findings of the study revealed that there are Family Life Training programmes provided to enhance the socio-economic empowerment of women in Oredo local government area of Edo State; and that the level of participation of women in family life education programmes is relatively low in Oredo local government area of Edo State among others. Based on the findings of the study it was concluded that family life training is crucial to the full attainment of women’s socio-economic empowerment not only in Oredo local government area but, in Nigeria as a whole.
It was therefore recommended among others that more family life training programmes should be sited in closer location especially across the rural communities to enable more women have access and benefit from the programme; the curriculum of family life training programmes should be expanded to include training in financial literacy skills as this would provide the leeway for the women so trained to be able to sustain their various businesses and that there should be more advocacy and awareness campaign about the availability and access to family life education programmes in order to significantly increase the level of participation of women in the programme.
