ABSTRACT

This study aimed at examining the Influence of Enviromental Challenges On the Educational Achievement of Students with Hearing Impairment in Oredo L.G.A of Edo State. Three research questions were raised to guide the study.

The design adopted for this study is the survey research design. The population of the study consists of 75 pupils. The sample consisted of 30 respondents randomly selected at convenience from primary four, five and six hearing impaired pupils in Ivbore/Igun Primary School for the hearing impaired Children, in Oredo, Benin City, Edo State Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from 30 (thirty) respondents. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two experts in the department of educational evaluation and counselling psychology. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.

Findings revealed that Poor family background, schools built around factories Markets or religious centres, congested classroom, Social isolation and lack of essential education materials pose challenges to pupils with hearing impairement in Oredo LGA. It was also revealed that hearning aid, use of sound system, use of pictorial illustration devices, visual aids such visual timers, signal light, vibrating eelerts and speech to-text software are the assistive technologies to aid the academic achievement of pupils with hearing impairement. The study therefore recommended that government authorities and educational policymakers should develop and implement policies aimed at improving the educational environment for pupils with hearing impairment, also, Education planners should make efforts to improve the physical infrastructure of schools, construct schools away from noisy activities, ensuring classrooms are spacious and well-equipped, and providing assistive technologies such as sound systems and visual aids.
