INFLUENCE OF DIET ON STRESS LEVELS OF STUDENTS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN KINETICS AND SPORTS SCIENCE

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to appraise the influence of diet on stress levels of students in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science, University of Benin. A total of eighty (80) respondents of Human Kinetics students (28 males and 52 females), aged ≥ 17years, from 100 level to 400 level in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science, University of Benin participated in this cross sectional study. Instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire which was developed by the researcher. It was validated by experts in the field of Human Kinetics and Sports Science.The simple count, frequency percentage was used to analyze the demographic information of students. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the response of the respondents to the research questions raised.

            The findings revealed that the causes of stress among students in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science include lack of finance, fear of failing an exam, increase or decrease in self-esteem, relationship issues and family problems. The data from the study also showed that the amount of food eaten by Human Kinetics students changes when stressed. It also revealed that Human Kinetics students relieve stress by eating (preferably junk food) and sleeping. Students in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science have varied strategies for managing stress but do not consider taking caffeine drinks, alcoholic drinks, or eating fruits as strategies for managing stress. The data further showed that Students in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science prefer meals that are non-nutritional due to heavy school demands and the fact that the Human Kinetics students are away from the comforts of their homes.

            This study therefore concluded that appropriate measures should be implemented to reduce stress and promote good eating practices among students in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science in the University of Benin.
