INFLUENCE OF DEPRESSION ON SUICIDE ATTEMPT AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

The study investigate the influence of depression on suicide attempt among undergraduate student in the University of Benin. In order to provide direction for the study two research questions were raised and one hypothesis were formulated. The population comprises all undergraduate student of three (300) level business administration class at the University of Benin. The sample of the study size was one (100) hundred student which was selected from the three (300) level business administration class. The instrument for the study was Depression Questionnaire (DQ) and Suicide Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ). The instrument were validated by the research's supervisor and two(2) other experts, for reliability of the instrument, the instrument were administered to twenty (20) student and data collected was subjected to Cronbach Alpha statistics the coefficient of .939 and .896 were obtained for Suicide attempt and Depression questionnaires respectively. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation to answer the question while Pearson product moment correlation statistics was used to test the hypothesis. The result revealed that Suicide attempt was low among undergraduate student in the University of Benin and Depression was low among undergraduate students in the University of Benin. The study also revealed that base on the findings the researcher recommended that mental health awareness and education should be improve and enhance and suicide prevention program should be implemented to prevent suicide.
