ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of demographic variables on the academic performance of students in vocational and technical education, in the University of Benin, Benin City. The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of age, gender, family background and residence/location on the academic performance of students in Vocational and technical education in University of Benin. Four research questions guided the study and a descriptive survey research was used for the study. The population of the study was 223 Vocational and Technical Education students and the sample was 100 students in the 2021/2022 academic session. Data was collected through the use of a well-structured questionnaire and the copies were administered, collected and analyzed. Mean was used for the data analysis. The findings revealed that age, family background, residence/location with the exception of gender does influence the academic performance of students in Vocational and Technical Education. The study recommends amongst others that parents and the society at large should give every support they can to all students and eliminate fears in them, also the government should sensitize the family on the need and importance of fully supporting their children education in order to improve their academic performances and the government should put in place, beneficial social and economic policies that can enable parents with low socioeconomic status have the opportunity to also advance the education of their children.
