Abstract

This study examines influence of cybercrime on the academic pursuit of senior secondary school in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study adopted the survey design on the bases of a sample of one hundred and fifty (150) respondents was selected from Senior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government Area. The study adopted the percentage technique to analyse the data collected from the field. The result shows that there is more perceived benefit from cybercrime and academic decision making process of students in senior secondary school in Egor Local Government Area. The result revealed that there is more perceived benefit from cybercrime and student’s academic preparation in senior secondary school in Egor Local Government Area. The result indicates that the addiction of students to the social media network affects classroom attendance of students in senior secondary school in Egor Local Government Area. The study recommends that as a matter of urgency, government and other related stakeholders and other key player of the Nigerian Economy should try and create more job opportunities for our young graduates in order to alleviate their involvement in negative societal behavior. A better economic system, creation of opportunities for the young Nigerian, would also make a lot differences. Since it was observed that majority of the respondents perceived the involvement of young people in cybercrime as a result of economic condition. The development of adequate legislation and within this approach to checkmate excess of cybercrimes among secondary school students. This requires first of all the necessary substantive criminal law provisions to criminalize acts such as computer fraud, illegal access, data interference, copyright violations and child pornography.
