ABSTRACT
This study aimed at examining the influence of class size on teachers’ effectiveness in public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Related literatures of eminent scholars views on the study were reviewed. Three research questions were raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The total population comprised all teachers in public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area. While the sample was a total of 58 respondents.
The research instrument employed for this study was a self-structured questionnaire that sought information from the respondents from selected schools. The reliability of the research instrument was ascertained using test-re-test reliability technique. The reliability of the retrieved instrument was ascertained using pearson product moment correlation coefficient. A reliability coefficient score of 0.71 was obtained. Data was collected from the respondents and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient.
Findings revealed that there was a significant relationship between class size and teachers’ quality of work in public senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was also revealed that there was a significant relationship between class size and teachers’ effectiveness in public senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Based on the findings, it was recommended thatmajor educational stakeholders like Universal Basic Education Board should make the actual population of students in junior secondary schools know to the State Government for effective planning for overcrowding in schools rather than conceal it.
