INFLUENCE OF BROKEN HOMES ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study focused on investigate influence of broken home on academic achievement of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Arca of Edo State. The family is the child's first place of contact with the world. Asa result of this, the child acquires initial education and socialization from parents and other significant persons in the family

To guide the study, four research questions were raised. The questions are outlined as follows: What ae the educational challenges faced by students from broken homes in Oredo Local Movement of Edo State? What are the emotional challenges faced by students from broken homes in Oredo 1ocal Government of Edo State? What are the social challenges faced by students from broken homes in Oredo Local Government of Edo State? What is the influences of broken homes on academic achievement of senior secondary school students (SSII) based on gender in Oredo Local Government of Edo State?  Out of these four questions 20 items were raised in the questionnaire to gather the data for this study and the questionnaire was subject to a Cronbach testing method and reliability value of 0.74 was obtained. The data collated were analyzed using the simple percentage and frequency counts.

The findings from the study revealed that students in a broken    home usually lack learning materials such as textbooks. it is also seen that students from broken homes claim that they have no cordial relationship with their mother and father. It was revealed that most of the students from broken home prone to sickness due to malnutrition. It was recommended that State ministry of education should make arrangement for the provision of special packages for secondary school students from broken homes with a view to improving their academic achievement. School administrators and curriculum planners should adopt the measures found in this study as ways of improving academic achievement among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
