INFLUENCE OF BROKEN HOME ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to examined the influence of broken home on academic achievement of secondary school students in Oredo local government area of Edo state, five research questions were raised to guide the study. What are the educational challenges faced by students from homes with parental marital problems in Oredo Local Government of Edo State? Are there emotional challenges faced by student in home with parental marital problems in Oredo school? What are the social challenges faced by students from homes with parental marital problems in Oredo Local Government of Edo State? To what extent do the influences of home with parental marital problems on academic achievement of senior secondary school students based on gender in Oredo Local Government of Edo State? Does broken home affect the academic performance of students in secondary school?

The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. Population of the study consisted of senior Secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. A sample of two hundred (200) students were randomly selected from the population. Questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents.  The data collated were analyzed using the frequency table and simple percentages.

The findings from the study it is seen that the student lack learning materials such as textbooks, it is seen that they are always isolated, it is seen that parental marital problem affects the academic achievement of students positively. It is recommended that State ministry of education should make arrangement for the provision of special packages for secondary school students from broken homes with a view to improving their academic achievement.School administrators and curriculum planners should adopt the measures found to in this study as ways of improving academic achievement among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. School teachers should pay special attention to the challenges faced by secondary school students from broken homes with the aim of assisting them overcome such problems.
