This study was designed to assess the influence of audio visual materials on the teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary school in Ovia North East Local Government Area.
Four research questions were raised. The method adopted by the researcher is the descriptive survey research design. A review of related literature was carried out. The reliability of the instruments were established at 0.72 and 0.76 using Cronbach Alpha method. A total of one hundred (100) randomly selected secondary school students in Ovia North East local Government Area constituted the study sample. Questionnaire and checklist were used for the study. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and mean.
The study revealed that different types of instructional material are used in the teaching and learning of biology Hindrances encountered in the use of audio visual materials in the teaching and learning of Biology are teacher possession of the required skill by teacher and student in handling the use of audio visual materials, Unstable power supply hinders the use of audio visual material in teaching and learning Biology, Inadequate audio visual materials in the school hinder its use in teaching and learning of Biology. And inadequate fund to buy new and repair faulty audio visual materials. Biology teachers use audio visual materials in the teaching of Biology. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that Government and proprietors of private secondary schools should ensure adequate provision of relevant and modern audio visual materials for effective implementation of the curriculum. Teachers should try hands on the production of simple audio visual so that students can see what they are talking about in the lessons. Biology teachers should endeavor to belong to professional bodies, attend seminar/workshops regularly
