ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of ASUU strike on the interest and academic performance of students in tertiary institutions citing University of Benin, Benin City as a case study. To achieve the purpose of the study, five research questions were raised and examined. Data was collected from 300 students randomly selected from 15 faculties in the University of Benin. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation. Criterions mean score of 2.50 was used as selection criterion.
The findings of the study include that ASUU strike influence the academic performance of final year students in Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City as it often results to loss of interest on academic activities by students. It was concluded ASUU strike influence the interest and will power of students in acquiring tertiary education qualification as it often makes it difficult for students to graduate as at when due.
Some of the recommendations made include that there should be adequate funding of the public universities as demanded by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). It was also recommended that Federal government should as a matter of urgency without delay pay all earned academic allowances owed to ASUU members.
