ABSTRACT

The research investigated the influence of alcoholic beverages on the athletic performance of student athletes in a tertiary institution. Data collection was conducted using a meticulously designed questionnaire, which was administered to a sample of 100 students from the department of Human Kinetics and Sport Science from the University of Benin. Data analysis was carried out employing a simple percentage method.

The findings of the study demonstrate that the consumption of alcoholic beverages had a significant negative impact on the athletic performance of the student-athletes. Factors such as reduced coordination, decreased endurance, and increased risk of injury were identified as key contributors to the decline in athletic performance. The study highlights the importance of educating student-athletes on the detrimental effects of alcohol consumption and the need for implementing policies and programs to promote healthy lifestyle choices among this population.

In light of these findings, it is strongly recommended that educational initiatives should be implemented to raise awareness among student-athletes about the detrimental effects of alcohol on athletic performance. Furthermore, support services, such as counseling and rehabilitation programs should be offered to student-athletes struggling with alcohol dependency or misuse. Accessible resources can aid in addressing alcohol-related issues and promoting healthier habits among athletes. Also, Government should develop and enforce policies within tertiary institutions that regulate alcohol consumption among student-athletes, especially during training seasons and competitive events. Lastly, alternative social activities and outlets for student-athletes that do not revolve around alcohol consumption should be encouraged. Providing diverse recreational options can promote camaraderie and socialization without the negative consequences associated with alcohol.
