ABSTRACT
This study made an assessment of the influence of aggression and anxiety on the sports performance of the female athletes in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Sciences, University of Benin and as observed and reported from a few noted studies, the presence of these two factors in a competition situation may lead to poor performance. Four research questions were raised to guide this study. The descriptive survey research method was adopted in carrying out this study. The population of this study comprised of eighty (80) female student athletes. A sample size of sixty (60) respondents was used for this study and the data was collected using the simple random technique. The research instrument used in carrying out this study was a self-structured questionnaire. The instrument was subjected to scrutiny in order to ascertain its content and construct validity and the test-retest reliability technique was used to ascertain its reliability. The data analysis was done with the use of descriptive statistics such as percentages, mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that aggression and anxiety have a negative effect on the sports performance of the female athletes in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Sciences, in that they result in the performance being poor due to certain psychological, physiological and behavioral factors. In conclusion, the student athletes agreed that aggression and anxiety influences their performance in sports activities negatively. It is recommended that the student athletes be thoroughly educated about aggression and anxiety, their effects and control in a game situation in order for the outcome of their performances to become more positive.
