ABSTRACT
Africa boasts a rich and very diverse cultural heritage; therefore, it is not surprising that she has proven to be a source of inspiration, both for Africans and people from other continents. Sadly, most Western artists, especially fashion houses and retailers fail to acknowledge where they got their inspiration from. It’s even more provoking when the items are sold for extortionate prices, with no benefit to African communities. Yet the world at large, even the African community chase after these products not being aware that their culture even plays a part in what’s considered “vogue”.
This research paper and the painting project based on it seeks to show some examples of how African artists have used their influence of their African heritage in their work from painting, fashion, hairstyle, photography etc.
The painting project was executed through construction of stretcher, stretching the canvas and priming. It would also capture making of miniature sketch and transfer of the sketch to the main canvas. The painting exercise include various stages and steps and finally detailing of figures. With the adherent to the element and principles of design, under the project supervisor the painting project is regarded as successful.
