ABSTRACT
The study examined the influence of Adult Education programmes on women participation in Nigeria with a case study Egor Local Government Area of Edo state. The study were to examine what Adult Education programmes exist in Egor Local Government Area, Edo state; what is the level of women participation in politics in Egor Local Government Area, Edo state; Does Adult Education programmes influence women participation in politics in Egor Local Government Area Edo state; what are the factors affecting women participation in politics in Egor Local Government Area, Edo state.
The research design employed in this study is the descriptive survey. The sample size of 100 women was used as a respondents and simple random sampling technique was used for the study, with 25 respondents from each Adult Education programmes centre comprising of both instructor and learners. The major instrument used for data collection in this study is the questionnaire, the questionnaire bears the title tagged; The role of Adult Education programmes on women participation in politics, the questionnaire is divided into two parts of "A and B". Section A dwells on the demographic data while section B questions were raised to answer the research questions of the study. The response scale adopted was the yes and no scale.
The study then stated that the available Adult Education programmes in Egor Local Government Area include basic literacy, retirement education, skill acquisition, civic education as well as leadership development programmes. And there is low level of women participation in Egor Local Government Area, the participation of women in politics can be positively influenced through specialized adult education programmes. There are factors that affects women participation in politics in Egor Local Government Area such as access to finance, marital status, religious beliefs, socio economic conditions and educational background which can be addressed through appropriate Adult Education programmes. One can comfortably conclude that there are sufficient Adult Education programmes in Egor Local Government Area.
