ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is examine the Influence of Accounting Student’s Prior Knowledge of Accounting Courses on their Academic Performance (A Case Study of University of Benin). This research adopted descriptive survey design The target population for this study consist of 196 (one hundred and ninety-six) full time students in 200 and 300 level in Business Education in Department of Vocational and Technical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. A sample size consisting of 75 (seventy-five) students was used for this study. The simple random sampling technique was used to select seventy-five (75) students from the accounting option/ course area in VTE. The research instrument used to collect data for the study was a structured questionnaire. The validity of instrument was ascertained by the researcher’s supervisor and the questionnaire was analyzed using Simple Mean (x) and Standard Deviation (SD). The findings revealed that students’ prior knowledge in accounting education influences students’ academic performance. Based on this findings, the researcher recommends that students who did not offer accounting education at the secondary school level should ensure they are polite, willing and spend time with those who offered the subject previously so as to enhance their performance. It was also recommended that since accounting is not taught in all secondary school, accounting lecturers in the university should employ various teaching methods to enhance students learning.
