ABSTRACT

This study examine the the influence of family background on secondary school students’ academic performance in Christian Religious Studies in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. This study specifically sought the influence of family size, family structure, parent’s educational, family income and parent’s occupation on students’ academic performance in CRS.. The population of the study consists of SS2 students in all public secondary school in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The sample for this study consist of one hundred (100) SSII students drawn from secondary schools in Ethiope East Local Government Area. This will be selected using multi- stage sampling technique. The instrument used for the study is a structured questionnaire. The findings from the research revealed that the education of parents, family structure influences the academic performance of students, Parent’s income level and Parent’s occupation has significant influence on the academic performance of students in CRS. Based on the findings, it was recommended that parents should ensure their family is a small size in order to meet all the basics needs of their children and in this case their educational needs.
