ABSTRACT

This study examined infertility and social stigma in Africa. Using Ayobami Adebayo's Stay with me and Lola Shoneyin's The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's wives, the study explored infertility as marital crisis, and social stigma as a consequence of societal demands or pressure in Africa.

The study adopts qualitative approach as relevant instances of infertility and social stigma in both novels are subjected to textual analysis using Feminist and Patriarchal theory.

The study found that in both texts, women are mostly blamed for the infertility issues in their marriages, while the men are left free even though they could be responsible for such situations. Also, the study revealed that women are made to face social ostracism, to lose their status and to be victims of being called unprintable negative labels and names.
