 ABSTRACT

This study entails the examining of aspect of semiotics on communication in Ohafia speech community. The study focused on the form, meaning and usefulness of sign and how they are been combined in Ohafia community. The study examine some verbal and non-verbal signs, of ohafia speech community, following the tradition of ferdinard which refers to the form (sound - image) of the sign, and not the material or object it represent, since they are arbitrary. Data employed for the research was gotten from competent native speakers and users of the Ohafia Language. The speakers from who the data were gotten from includes; an elderly man who is a member of the Amala (king’s cabinet), an aged woman, a youth in his thirties and a youth in his twenties. These data were collected by the use of analogue materials like notebooks, biro, telephone and recorder. The findings of this study reveal among other things different contrastive unit in forms of the linguistics sign that leads to change in the form of the sign and its meaning in ohafia speech community. The study also reveals that both verbal and non-verbal signs are been used to mediate the socio cultural and socio political life of the people.
