ABSTRACT

The medicinal plant Sida acuta commonly known as “wire weed” is renowned for its traditional medicinal properties in various cultures around Africa. This research project investigated the in vitro anti-protein glycation and anti-pancreatic lipase activities of the ethanol extract of Sida acuta. The research methodology involves the extraction of the chemical constituents from the ethanol extract of Sida acuta, and subjecting them to in vitro test to evaluate their effects on the inhibition of protein glycation and pancreatic lipase using in vitro assays. The results of this study shows that in protein glycation, the ethanol extract of Sida acuta had better inhibitory (85.93%) when compared to the standard (74.93%). It was also observed in pancreatic lipase activity that the ethanol extract of Sida acuta had better inhibitory action on pancreatic lipase enzyme (8.97%) when compared to the standard (Orlistat) (8.67%). In conclusion, the medicinal properties displayed by the extract shows that it could be considered as a good pharmacological agent for the management of diabetes and obesity.
