ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a leading metabolic disorder in the world. Antidiabetic actions of phytochemicals from various medicinal herbs have been explored as an alternative therapy in the management of diabetes due to the adverse effects of synthetic drugs used in allopathic medicine. α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory potentials were investigated in aqueous leave extracts of Ageratum conyzoides also known as Billy goat weed. The result from this study on the α-amylase inhibitory property showed that the standard (acarbose) with an IC50 of 29998.78 µg/ml has a better inhibitory effect than the aqueous extract of A. conyzoides which had an IC50 of 31052.14 µg/ml. However, the result obtained from the α-glucosidase inhibitory assay showed that the aqueous extract of A. conyzoides with a lesser IC50 of 4795.38 µg/ml showed better α-glucosidase inhibitory property than the standard (acarbose) (10071.48 µg/ml). In conclusion, A. conyzoides aqueous extract exhibited in vitro antidiabetic activity, thus making it a valuable natural resource for the development of potential treatment for diabetes.
