ABSTRACT

Tetrapleura tetraptera (T. tetraptera) commonly known as "Aidan fruit" or "Prekese," is an African spice widely recognized for its traditional medicinal uses. T. tetraptera contains several phytochemical including saponins which has been reported to have antidiabetic activity. The aim of this research was to show using available data that saponin which was isolated from T. tetraptera has an anti-diabetic and anti-pancreatic lipase effect. This study investigates the in vitro antidiabetic, and anti-pancreatic lipase activities of saponins extract from T. tetraptera using αamylase, α-glucosidase, anti-pancreatic lipase, and protein glycation. The result from α-amylase assay in this study shows that the percentage inhibition of saponin extract of T. tetraptera (58.13%) at 640µg/ml is greater than the percentage inhibition of the standard (25.25%). The result obtained from α-glucosidase assay, showed that the percentage inhibition of saponin extract of T. tetraptera (23.08%) at 640µg/ml is lesser than the percentage inhibition of the standard (75.43%). It was observed that in anti-pancreatic lipase assay, the percentage inhibition of saponin extract of T. tetraptera (26.38%) at 640µg/ml is greater than the percentage inhibition of the standard (15.28%). In addition, the result of protein glycation assay showed that the percentage inhibition of saponin extract of T. tetraptera (98.13%) at 640µg/ml is greater than the percentage inhibition of the standard (97.42%). In conclusion, T. tetraptera saponin exhibited in vitro anti-diabetic and anti-pancreatic lipase activities, making it a valuable natural resource for the development of potential treatments for diabetes and obesity. Further research is warranted to explore its therapeutic potential fully and advance its application in managing these metabolic disorders.
