ABSTRACT
Lagbaja is a popular music artist from Kwara State, Nigeria, who adorns himself with mask costume in his music videos and while on stage during live performances. The study investigated the impressions of Nigerian youths on Lagbaja’s mask costume, using the Full-time First Degree students in Ekehuan Campus of University of Benin. The sample size of 400 respondents was randomly selected using the Taro Yamane’s method of sampling technique. The three departments and one institute offering Bachelors Degree Programmes in Ekehuan Campus were the bases of such selection. The survey research design was employed for the study, which entails the use of questionnaire instrument to collect data from respondents. The responses of respondents were collated and analyzed using simple percentage, after presenting details in tabular form. The analyses led to the findings that the Nigerian youth fan base are positively disposed to Lagbaja’s use of mask costume. It was concluded that Lagbaja’s mask costume is a cultural visual representation of Lagbaja’s musical philosophy, which buttresses the ideology of pain among the Nigerian populace, and the need for a coherent effort at liberty from bad leadership. Recommendations were made to the effect that contemporary music artists should explore different costume options, as means of protecting their culture.
