ABSTRACT
This study explores the impolite strategies deployed by comedians in Nigeria stand-up comedy to attack the face of their target through humour and entertaining functions. This study also looks at how language is deployed comically by the comedians to achieve their aim. Data are sourced from purposively sampled record videos of Ay Live comedy from YouTube between 2019-2021. They were subject to a critical analysis. The study discovers that out of five super-strategies proposed by Jonathan Culpeper, Nigeria stand-up comedians make use of four; namely positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness and withhold politeness. This study concludes that impolite language is a necessary tool used by Nigeria stand-up comedians to creatively exhibit humour in their interaction with the audience.
