ABSTRACT

In recent years, social media has become a significant part of the media landscape, revolutionizing the way information is disseminated, consumed, and interacted with by audiences. This abstract delves deeper into the implications of social media use specifically by broadcast stations operating in Edo State, Nigeria. The study examines the extent to which broadcast stations in Edo State are embracing social media as part of their communication strategies. It investigates the platforms they utilize, the frequency and types of content shared, and the methods employed to engage their audience. One of the primary focuses is on the impact of social media integration on audience engagement. By reaching out to the public through platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, broadcast stations can potentially broaden their viewership and listenership, as well as facilitate direct interactions with their audience. This can lead to real-time feedback, increased participation in discussions, and a sense of community among viewers and listeners. Furthermore, the research explores how social media usage influences the delivery of news and information. Broadcast stations can leverage these platforms to break news faster, share updates in real-time, and provide additional context through multimedia content. However, the study also takes into account the challenges that may arise, such as the risk of spreading misinformation and maintaining journalistic integrity while navigating the fast-paced world of social media. Ethical considerations and responsible social media use are also highlighted in this abstract. With the potential to amplify voices and influence public opinion, broadcast stations must be cautious in curating and verifying content before sharing it on social media platforms. The findings of this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the implications of social media use by broadcast stations in Edo State, Nigeria. It sheds light on the opportunities and risks associated with this digital transformation in the media industry, guiding media professionals and policymakers in making informed decisions about their social media strategies.
