ABSTRACT

A total of three soil samples were taken from Technical College Road (S&T) in Benin-City, Edo State Nigeria. These soil samples were taken and subjected to geotechnical analyses in the laboratory which includes the particle size analysis, moisture content, compaction tests, specific gravity tests, consistency limit tests and shear strength tests; all in accordance with the British Standards Institution (BS, 1377, 1990). The results from the analyses showed that the soil samples were poorly graded (SP) with percentage sands ranging from 95.73%- 99.51%, moisture content from 12.17% to 15.46%, specific gravity from 2.52-2.63, with no form of plasticity and exhibiting liquid limit ranging from 25.23%-27.53%. The compaction test results showed that the Maximum Dry Density (MDD) ranges from 1.55-1.83g/cm³ and the Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) from 12.40%-17.80. The shearing strength results turned out to be ranging from 0.70-0.83KN/M² for cohesion and from 9.88⁰-10.49⁰ for internal angle of friction. These indicated that they will make for excellent construction materials for both buildings and roads although there might be need for improvement with respect to their water holding capacities.
