IMPACT OF VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE ON CAREER CHOICE OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION STUDENT IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

This study determined the impact of vocational guidance on career choice of vocational and technical students of the university of Benin. Specifically four research questions were raised to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level significance. 

The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population for this study consisted of two hundred and four (204) Vocational and Technical Education students in which Accounting Education are ninety-seven (97), Office Technology and Management are sixteen (16), Home Economics Education are fifty-eight (58) and Agricultural Education are thirty-three (33).  The sample size for the study was made up of two hundred and four (204) Vocational and Technical Education students in four-course area in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. University of Benin, Benin City. As a result of the manageable size, the entire population was used as the sample size, hence census. The instrument used for the data collection was a questionnaire titled “Impact of Vocational Guidance on the Career Choice of Vocational and Technical Education Students (IVGCCVTES)”. The questionnaire was segmented into two sections: A and B. Section A measured the demographic variables of the respondents such as gender, age and so on while section B comprised 20 item statements which were drawn up from the research questions. The instrument was face validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education (VTE), Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City.The reliability coefficient of the instrument used was obtained by measuring the internal consistency of the items which was carried out using Cronbach alpha Statistics. This instrument was administered once to 20 Vocational and Technical Education Students from Ambrose Ali University who are not part of the study population and the coefficient derived was 0.81 which indicated that the instrument was reliable. The data collected was analyzed using mean, standard deviation and two sample independent t-test using Statistical Packages for the Social Science (SPSS).

The findings showed that vocational guidance influence career choice of accounting, office technology and management, home economics and agricultural education students in vocational and technical education to a high extent. The findings also revealed that there is no significant difference between the impact of vocational guidance on career choice of male and female vocational and technical students of the University of Benin. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that vocational guidance significantly influenced career choice of vocational and technical students of the university of Benin. It was recommended among others career resource information for specific field should be incorporated into the curriculum especially for fresh student of vocational and technical education
