ABSTRACT

This study was designed to examine the impact of visual literacies on effective teaching and learning of English language in senior secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. Three (3) research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey. The population of the study comprises of all the 82 English Language teachers in the secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. A total number of fifty (50) teachers were drawn from the population of the study using the simple random sampling technique were used as the respondents for this study. The research instrument for the study was a Questionnaire titled: Impact of Visual Literacies on Effective Teaching and Learning of English Language in Senior Secondary Schools Questionnaire” (IVLETLELSSSQ), which was distributed to the respondents and collected immediately after completion from respondents. The simple percentage and mean score was used in computing the responses of the questionnaire items. To account for the reliability of the study, the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used which gave a value of 0.71. At the end of the study, the researcher found that availability of visual aids, multimedia resources, and technology-based tools plays a major role in teachers' ability to incorporate visual literacies, Visual literacies often provide visual context to accompany audio content, making it easier for students to understand spoken language and follow along with audio materials and Interactive tools and technology-based platforms enable students to engage actively with English language content, leading to better retention and comprehension. The researcher recommended among others Government should provide visual materials in schools to assist teachers in the teaching and learning of English language. This use of multimedia resources like videos or interactive simulations will make students interested in learning and School management should organize training for English teachers in modern pedagogical approaches in order to facilitate readiness to integrate visual literacies in teaching English language.
