ABSTRACT Traffic congestion and parking difficulties are some of the major problems facing areas of high human density and high vehicular traffic. The Central Business District (CBD) of Benin City has a high concentration of human activities and vehicular traffic as it is the major hub of commercial activities of the city and its peripherals. The imbalance between the rate of population increase at the CBD of Benin City and road infrastructures has resulted to frequent traffic congestion and parking difficulties and has negatively impacted socio-economic activities in the area. This research work was therefore carried out to assess the impact of traffic congestion and parking difficulties on socio-economic activities in the CBD of Benin City. The research work also identified the causes of the problems and proffered solutions to it. The survey research design was used for the study. A total of 400 questionnaires were administered to randomly selected respondents. The data were analysed using a combination of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The result revealed that the causes of traffic congestion and parking difficulties are manifold and can be categorised into physical, human, land use, technical and government negligence. Majority of the respondents park their vehicle on the street which contribute to traffic congestion and there are two peak period of traffic congestion. It was also revealed that the impacts of the problems on socioeconomic activities are severe and the problems have huge impact on level of productivity in the study area. Some measures were recommended which include government intervention and adherence to traffic rules by road users.
