Abstract
The researcher's instrument was a questionnaire designed by the researcher herself and it was titled Impact of Teaching Practice on the Proficiency of Teachers in Nigeria. Five items were drafted from research question one to four. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher's project supervisor and two experts from the department of educational foundations, faculty of education, university of Benin.
The findings revealed that through teaching practice where the trainee teacher has opportunity to interact with the students and professional teachers in first hand situations it has helped enhance their professional skills and broaden their knowledge on how to prepare and organize their teaching methods in preparation for teaching. Teaching practice has therefore positively impacted the proficiency of the trainee teacher for the teaching profession to a large extent. It shows that to a considerable extent the importance of teaching practice which encompasses the major aims and objectives of teaching practice has been well met as it has contributed in building the student teachers knowledge of the teaching process as to school curriculums and how it works, helped them to have a good idea on how to relate their teaching methods to future career, given insight on how to develop their own unique teaching ways and methods of working with children and therefore pass the teaching requirements which makes them quality teachers.Teaching practice in general helps build up the teacher’s mastery and professionalism as well as attributes which makes up a good teacher.
Thus in producing competence and proficient teachers, the researcher suggested that continuity of teaching practice should be encouraged and should be made mandatory for students who wants to go into teaching profession.
