ABSTRACT

The study looked into how different teaching strategies affected senior secondary school students' English language proficiency in Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were posed and looked at in order to fulfill the study's objectives. The descriptive survey research design was chosen for this investigation. The 4,011 senior secondary school students in Edo State's Ovia North East Local Government Area made up the study's population. There were 150 responders in the study, which was the sample size. A structured questionnaire named "Impact of Teaching Methods on Secondary School Students’ Performance in English Language Questionnaire (ITMSSSPELQ)" was the tool utilized to collect the data. The findings from the study include that secondary school students perform up to an acceptable level in English language learning. It was determined that the teaching methodology in senior secondary schools in Edo State's Ovia North East Local Government Area had a substantial impact on the English language proficiency of the students. In order to improve students' academic performance, the study suggested, among other things, that the student-centered approach of teaching be utilized as the main teaching strategy while teaching English in secondary schools.
