ABSTRACT
This study investigated the impact of teachers’ method, attitude and motivation in teaching and learning of Literature-in-English. It sought to examine the extent to which teaching methods affect the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English, the extent to which teachers’ attitude affect the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English, and the extent to which teachers motivation affect the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English. To guide the study, three (3) research questions were raised. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was made up of 26,785 students. A sample size of 300 secondary school students was selected from 10 secondary schools out of the fourteen public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. The simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample from the target population. A total of ten secondary schools were selected at random with 30 students representing each school, these constituted the sample size of the study. The research instrument for the study was a self-constructed questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. Cronbach Alpha statistics was used to establish the internal consistency of the items. The reliability of 0.89 was obtained. The statistical analysis was carried out using percentages for respondents’ bio-data, while mean and standard deviation was used in the data analysis of the raised research questions. The findings of this research based on the research questions raised showed that the teaching methods affected the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English to a high extent; teachers attitude affected the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English to a high extent; teachers motivation affected the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English to a high extent. It was concluded that teachers of Literature-in-English should be mindful of their teaching methods, attitude and motivation as it can go a long way in impacting on their teaching and learning transactions as regards the subject in secondary schools. It was chiefly recommended that teachers of Literature-in-English should endeavor to utilize different teaching methods in the teaching of the subject. They should ensure that they adopt the most appropriate teaching method depending on the nature of the subject content/topic to be taught.
