ABSTRACT

Presbyopia is among the commonest physiological changes occurring in the adult eye. Few population based surveys have been conducted to access the impact of spectacle presbyopic correction on the quality of vision symptoms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of spectacle presbyopic correction on quality of vision symptoms in the adult population in Benin City, Edo State. A survey questionnaire (Quality of vision questionnaire) was administered to 344 subjects who currently use spectacle presbyopic correction aged 40+ years in order to access their quality of vision symptoms. The data was analyzed using the statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer software and Winsteps Stastistical Analysis software. This study showed that 29.1% of the spectacle presbyopic wearers have symptoms of headache, 18.3% complained of headache while 2.9% complained of squint. Age and gender had an effect on the quality of vision. (p< 0.05). QoV worsened slightly as the amount of time the subject wore their spectacle prescription increased. This study will help eye practitioners in Nigeria to know the quality of vision experienced with their presbyopic patients, thereby improving their overall visual function.
