ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of social media on students’ academic performance in the University of Benin. The study adopted the survey research technique. Purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample of 250 students in University of Benin. Questionnaires, was used to collect data from respondents. A simple percentages and frequency count were used to analyze the demographic data. Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) and Technological Determinism Theory were adopted to conduct this study.Based on the findings, the social network which students are exposed to influences their academic performance. In addition, the findings showed that a great number of students in University of Benin are addicted to social media and as a result of this, their academic performance is affected negatively as there are various risks that come with the use of social media. To this end, the researcher recommended that social media should be used for educational purposes as well as recreational and entertainment purposes. Social Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance academic activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ academic performances; and students should be monitored by lecturers and parents on how they use these sites. This is to create a balance between social media and academic activities of students to avoid setbacks in the academic performances of the students.
