ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of small and medium scale enterprises on economic development.The study was probing to investigate the following research objectives; to examine the impact of small and medium scale enterprises growth rate on economic growth, employment generation growth rate and government expenditure in promoting the growth of small and medium scale enterprises. The population consisted small and medium scale enterprises in Ovia north east,Edo south local government,Benin City. The sample size comprised of 400 SMEs obtained using the sample size formula issued by Taro Yamane to select small and medium enterprises that were used for the study. Descriptive analysis (frequency and percentage) alongside chi-square was used to analyze respondents data gotten through administered questionnaires. The findings established that ;

SMEs serve as catalyst for employment generation, national growth and expedite economic development, SMEs thrive on the basis or structure of the environment they are built upon and a business that remains relevant continues to operate actively and interact with the environment. In view of the findings,seminars and workshops should be organized for SME owners by the government to improve their managerial skills so as to create viable businesses thereby generating employment opportunities. Also, government should endeavor to regulate the business environment and ensure that SMEs are protected as a business environment that is not implemented properly puts SMEs at high risk of failure.
