ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the Impact of School Environment on the Academic Performance of Pupils in Public Primary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of school environment on pupil’s academic performance, the effects of school environment on the academic performance of pupils based on school location, the extent in which school environment affect the academic performance of primary school pupils in Oredo local government area. To achieve this aim three research questions were raised. The descriptive survey design was used for this study, the population of this study consisted of all the teachers in public schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, the sample size of this study was 60 teachers. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was ascertained using test-retest method. Thereafter, the Pearson product moment coefficient (Pearson) was used to determine its level of reliability. A correlation coefficient of 0.76 was obtained and it showed the instrument was reliable. The major findings of this study revealed that the school environment has an impact on the academic performance of pupils, the school buildings, facilities and physical condition of the school environment all contribute to the academic performance of pupils. Based on the findings the following recommendations were made, Government should provide adequate funding and resources to ensure that the school environment are being maintained and both government and school proprietors should invest in quality infrastructure and government and proprietors should implement professional development programs for teachers.
