ABSTRACT
The study examined the role school environment plays on the academic performance of senior secondary school students who offer biology in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, factors such as the physical facilities in the school, class size and the disciplinary levels of the biology teachers were examined to know the direct effects on the academic performance of the students who offer biology in senior secondary schools situated in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
A questionnaire was constructed by the researcher to guide the research and it had two sections , section A which deals with personal data of the respondents and section B which had twenty (20) items that deals with the four research questions used to gather information. The information gathered was analyzed using statistical method of data analysis. One Hundred (100) copies of the questionnaire was administered to one hundred (100) respondents who offer biology in five (5) senior secondary schools out of the fourteen (14) schools located in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
Based on the findings gathered from the research, it was discovered that poor and dilapidating school facilities, large class size, teachers indiscipline as well as students behaviour towards learning, affects the academic performance of students offering biology in senior secondary schools in the local government area. Furthermore , recommendations were made to address the issue of learning facilities and environment, teachers and students behaviour so it can be convenient for students who offer biology in the senior secondary schools located in Oredo Local Government Area.
