Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of personality traits on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Edo state
The survey research design was employed in the study. the population consisted of students in secondary schools in Egor local government area, Edo State. The sample size of 125 students was selected using simple random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire and stress scale. The data collected was analyzed thus; the bio data by using frequency count and percentage analysis, second part of the questionnaire by mean and standard deviation.
The findings of the study revealed that there are numerous personality traits of students in secondary schools. The personality of secondary school students is impulsive, open to learning new things but not emotionally intelligent. Factors affecting the academic performance of students include classroom environment, instructional materials used and teaching methods employed. It was seen that personality traits have a significant relationship with academic performance. providing a conducive environment, employing more qualified teachers, use of electronic materials and orientation given to students on standard of behaviour. The study recommended based on the findings that students should be educated on the knowledge of individual differences of which personality trait plays a major role on how one react to issues and academic activities.
