IMPACT OF NIGERIAN UNION OF TEACHERS ON THE MANAGEMENT OF EDUCATION CRISES IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of Nigerian Union of Teachers on the management of education crises in primary schools in Edo state. It also examined the factors responsible for education crises in primary schools, the impact of education crises on the management of primary schools and the impact of the Nigerian Union of Teachers(NUT) in managing education crises. Three(3) research questions were raised and it was answered at 0.05 level of significance.

This research adopted the descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprises of all teachers in the eighty eight(88) public primary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State and nine hundred and fifty one(951) teachers in these public school. A sample of one hundred(100) teachers randomly selected from ten(10) public primary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State was used for this study. The research instrument used to collect data for the study was a structured questionnaire. The validity of instrument was ascertained by the researcher's supervisor and the questionnaire was analyzed using simple percentage mean and theoretical mean.

The findings indicate that factors responsible for crises in primary school among others are; teachers are not paid their salaries when due, teachers are not promoted on time, infrastructure is decayed and general poor condition of teachers. Based on the findings, it was recommended that government and NUT should find a common ground to avoid crises at all cost so that schools will not be shut down, academic calenders will not be prolonged, strike will not be embarked on and riot will not happen
