SUMMARY
This study has examined a brief history of Nigerian system of migration and economic and social impacts on Nigeria. The study revealed that migration is stimulated primarily by rational economic considerations which is believed to have relative benefits on those who succeed the risk and costs of both financial and psychological effect in short and long run. Migration, be it regular or irregular, to Europe and other parts of the world is usually sought by many to avoid the harsh economic condition in host country and seek greener pastures in the foreign country. The restrictions and expenses involved in regular migration make individuals opt for irregular migration as an appealing and viable option and this desire for a better life has led many young Nigerians to decide to be smuggled or to fall prey to the deceptions of criminal gangs (called human traffickers).
