ABSTRACT

The research examines the impact of micro-finance bank on agricultural farmers’ productivity in Ovia North East, Local Government Area, Edo State. The research provides an evaluation on financing rural agriculture and the challenges of accessing micro-credit loan by farmers. Based on the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents the research findings show that farmers activity is not gender based as 70.7% of the farmers were male and 29.3% female. This indicates that both male and female can actively involve in farming activities. It is obvious that more male tends to participate in farming activities compared to the female. The age distribution of those involve in farming activities was observed to center on active population age groups which span between 21-40 years (57.3%) while 27.4% of the farmers between 41-60 years of age. Thus age grade is a very prominent attribute that needs to be put into consideration when it comes to farming operation. However, the result of the analysis revealed that larger proportion of the farmers were married (58.6%) followed by singles (24.2%) who are yet to marry. More so, respondents that were of married status were observed to cater for larger household size, also the singles were also observed to have dependents. From the research findings, the study revealed that larger percentage of the farmers have been living in the area for than 16 years above. This clearly shows majority of the farmers had stayed long in the area to know what is happening in the area. In view of the educational status, majority of the farmers observed had secondary education (38.9%) followed by those with tertiary education (31.2%).
